How to order Textbooks and Other Course Materials

Textbook Requisitions - Why They Are Needed Months in Advance
Our goal is to make sure that textbooks are on the shelves on time and in the right quantities. To achieve that goal we undertake a time consuming research and procurement process. The sooner we have this information in hand, the better are our chances for success.

We try to provide a mixture of both new and used books, new for those students who prefer a clean textbook and used for the more budget-minded students. When you request a title for your course, store personnel go to several sources to find copies. (We do this for each title you request and for every other title requested.) The Store checks with publishers and distributors to obtain new books and buys used copies from students and used book wholesalers.

Students are our first source of textbooks. The opportunity to sell back unwanted and unneeded books helps students financially when they sell them back and when they buy used books for the next semester. This student buyback process requires advanced preparation by the bookstore's staff.

New titles and new editions that you request are ordered directly from the publishers. Adequate lead time is required to ensure that the publishers are not out of stock, that delivery problems or other delays will not prevent us from having your books on the shelves when classes begin. Advance notice is especially important for foreign books, which frequently take longer to arrive.

What You Can Do To Speed Up The Process
If you are not sure of all the textbooks you will be using, please submit a course requisition for the titles you are sure of, and you may submit another request later or call to add to your requisition already on file.

Also, if your class size changes or a section is added, please let us know. If we are not aware that you have moved to a larger classroom or that the registrar will be admitting more students than initially indicated, we may run out of books and have to reorder.

How Do We Determine the Quantity of Textbooks to Order
We strive to have enough books of each title for everyone who wants one. To achieve this goal, we carefully review all the information available to us. This includes the quantity you requested, the sale history of both the book and the course, and the pre-enrollment figures. We do not adjust the quantity you request arbitrarily. Our thorough examination process is used to determine the number of books that will fulfill the needs of every student that wants to buy the book. At the same time, we strive to reduce the number of excess books sent back to the publishers. This will help keep book price increases to a minimum.

Non-Book Course Materials
We will stock any technical material you may need for your course, whether it is accounting paper, art supplies, or english journals.

Course Packets or Custom Publications
All custom printed material must have copyright permission in accordance with federal law. University Graphics and Printing will obtain permission and print the material. Just include the packet information on your requisition so we can ensure there is ample shelf space.

While it might seem easier to just photocopy the material needed, doing so would not respect the work, ideas and intellectual property of the authors.

How to Obtain Desk Copies
We can help you get desk copies from the publishers. Desk copies are typically available directly through the publishers. This allows them to establish a relationship with you and gain better knowledge about the titles that are for classroom use. To make it easy for you to order desk copies, we send desk copy order forms to your department and we keep a supply at the store. We will be happy to supply you with the addresses and phone numbers to assist you in aquiring desk copies.
