The University of Vermont Foundation has announced new officers and members of its leadership organizations — the Board of Directors, Foundation Leadership Council, and Foundation Fellows. The announcements were made by O. Richard Bundy, III, president and CEO of the UVM Foundation.

New officers of the UVM Foundation Board of Directors are Don McCree, treasurer, and Diane Seder, secretary. New ex-officio members of the Board of Directors are Brian M. Boardman, chair of the University of Vermont Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors, and David A. Daigle, chair of the University of Vermont Board of Trustees. New members of the University of Vermont Foundation Board of Directors are Kathy Battistoni, James M. Betts, M.D., William Meezan, H. David Reines, M.D., FACCS, and Claudia Serwer. New members of the Foundation Leadership Council are Daniel Lehan III and Stephen Malshuk.The inaugural class of Foundation Fellows are Scott Bailey, Dana Gulley, Molly Kelly-Yahner, Germain Mopa, Brian Sozansky, and Christopher Veal.

New Officers of the University of Vermont Foundation Board of Directors

Don McCreeDon McCree (Rye, N.Y.) is Vice Chairman and Head of Commercial Banking for Citizens Financial Group. McCree has served in a number of senior leadership positions over the course of 31 years at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and its predecessor companies. He has extensive experience in commercial banking gained through positions at JPMorgan including head of corporate banking and CEO of global treasury services, head of global credit markets, North American co-head of fixed income, European co-head of investment banking and head of European and Asian syndicated finance. He also served as head of wholesale risk management and head of treasury and corporate development. He retired from JPMorgan in mid-2014. Prior to the merger of J.P. Morgan and Chase, McCree was in London, where he was joint head of investment banking for Chase. McCree joined Chemical Bank, a predecessor of Chase, in 1983. He earned a bachelor of arts from the University of Vermont in 1983 and is married to Gabrielle McCree.

Diane SederDiane Seder (Middleton, Wis.) is executive vice president of Milwaukee Valve Company, a family-owned manufacturer of plumbing and heating valves, and a member of its board of directors. She is a member of the board and of the executive committee of the Jewish Federation of Madison, Wis. Seder also serves on the executive committee of Hillel at the University of Wisconsin and on the boards of the University of Wisconsin, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, and Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. She earned a bachelor of arts in art history and French from the University of Vermont in 1975. She is married to Bruce Rosen, and they have three children.

New Ex-officio Members of the University of Vermont Foundation Board of Directors

Brian BoardmanBrian M. Boardman (Burlington, Vt.) is an owner and top-producing agent for Coldwell Banker Hickok & Boardman Realty. He worked on Wall Street for 10 years before returning to Burlington in 1991. He is currently serving as chair of the board of the UVM Medical Center Foundation. In addition to his UVM Medical Center board work, he serves as a member of the advisory boards for the New Moran Plant and for Spectrum Youth & Family Services. He has served on the boards at The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and was a founding board member of Mobius: The Mentoring Movement. He was on the board of the Mater Christi School, serving two terms as board chair. He presently volunteers with COTS (Committee for Temporary Shelter) at its warming shelter. Boardman earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Vermont in 1981. He and his wife Brooks reside in Burlington, Vermont, with their four children.

David DaigleDavid A. Daigle (Greenwich, Conn.) is a fixed-income portfolio manager at Capital Group. He has 21 years of investment experience, all with The Capital Group Companies, Inc. Earlier in his career, David also had investment analyst responsibilities and covered multiple industries including health care, wireless communications, technology and transportation. He serves as the current chair of the Board of Trustees for the University of Vermont. Daigle holds an M.B.A. with honors from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Vermont in 1989. Married to Elizabeth Lyons Daigle ’90, they reside in Greenwich, Conn., with their three children.

New Members of the University of Vermont Foundation Board of Directors

Kathy BattistoniKathy Battistoni (Duxbury, Mass.) was born and raised in Saranac Lake, N.Y., and earned her bachelor of science in psychology from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. In 1985 she earned a master's degree in counseling from the University of Vermont before launching into a career in management consulting at Accenture, then known as Arthur Andersen. There, she rose to the position of partner and helped build the firm’s human capital transformation practice and later led the workforce transformation for the Americas team. Following Accenture, she served as managing director in personal and workplace investing at Fidelity Investments. In 2012, she launched and ran the Boston office for North Highland Worldwide Consulting. She is currently a Partner at KB Partners, LLC, a consulting solutions firm focusing on change management, organizational and process design, and executive leadership coaching. She is an overseer at the South Shore Conservatory, a mentor at both Year Up and Boston Partners in Education, and a guest lecturer in change management at Suffolk University School of Business.

Jim BettsJames M. Betts, M.D., (Alameda, Calif.) received his B.A. from the University of Vermont in 1969 and his M.D. from the UVM College of Medicine in 1973. He is a pediatric surgeon and urologist at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland, Calif. Recently stepping down as the surgeon-in-chief and director of trauma services, he has practiced at Children's for the past 33 years since completing his pediatric surgical and urologic residencies at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. A native of Bennington, Vt., and a long-time supporter of UVM, he has served with the Alumni Association of the university and the College of Medicine for over 30 years. A member of the UVM Board of Trustees from 2004-2010, he was the 2003 recipient of the A. Bradley Soule Award in recognition for his service to the University of Vermont. With the significant number of UVM alumni in the Bay Area, he was active with forming the UVM San Francisco Regional Alumni Board. He served as a team physician for the US Olympic Committee from 1979-1983 and was a founding member of the USOC Anti-Doping Committee, serving from 1984-2000, and chairing the committee from 1992-1996. Jim says he is fortunate to have a second home on the magnificent California coast in Big Sur, where he serves as a volunteer firefighter with Big Sur Fire. He was recognized as its Firefighter of the Year for 2015. He also serves as a tactical physician for the FBI-San Francisco SWAT Team, and is embedded with the Bureau for operations in the Bay Area, throughout California, and the western United States.

Bill MeezanWilliam (Bill) Meezan (New York, N.Y.) earned his B.A. in psychology from UVM in 1967, his M.S.W. from Florida State University in 1969, and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1978. A retired social work academic, his last position was as the Mary Ann Quaranta Professor of Social Justice for Children and Distinguished Professor at Fordham University. Prior to that position, he held endowed chairs at the University of Southern California and the University of Michigan and served as dean of the College of Social Work at Ohio State University. A Fulbright scholar, he has served on the boards of numerous professional organizations and social service agencies and is a consultant to universities both in the U.S. and abroad. His scholarship has garnered a number of awards, and his contributions to the wellbeing of children was recognized when he was granted an honorary doctorate by UVM in 2013. Meezan is married to W. Michael Brittenback and resides in New York City.

H. David ReinesH. David Reines, M.D., FACS, FCCS (Washington, D.C.) is the vice chair for quality and safety in the Department of Surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Va., director of continuing medical education for the Inova Health Systems, and professor of surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He graduated from Cornell University and the University of Vermont School of Medicine and completed a fellowship in surgical critical care and trauma at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Fla. He became the chief of critical care at Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, S.C., from 1978-1988, and moved to become the chief of trauma and surgical critical care at the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU). From 1991-2001 he was the chairman of surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Newton, Mass., a member of the Partners Group. Dr. Reines moved to Inova Fairfax Hospital in 2001 as the vice chair of surgery and the founding program director for the surgical residency at Fairfax. He is the author of over 120 peer-reviewed papers on sepsis, infections, trauma, surgical education, and surgical safety. He has served on numerous editorial boards including the Journal of Trauma, Critical Care Medicine, and the Journal of Surgical Education. A governor of the American College of Surgeons, his interests include surgical education, manpower, and surgical quality. Dr. Reines is married to NPR legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg.

Claudia SerwerClaudia Serwer (New York, N.Y. and Dennis, Mass.) is a career diplomat, economist and negotiator. She retired after 30 years as a U.S. foreign service officer specializing in international trade, foreign investment, energy, security and aviation issues. Most of her career was spent in Latin America and at the State Department in Washington, D.C. She also served at the Office of the United States Trade Representative, Executive Office of the President. A graduate of the University of Vermont who holds an M.A. from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, she is an active philanthropist who has volunteered her time for the Legal Aid Society, in the office of the Brooklyn District Attorney, and at the New York office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. In addition, she is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Johns Hopkins Center for Innovative Medicine. She is married to Michael Skol.

New Members of the University of Vermont Foundation Leadership Council

The University of Vermont Foundation's Foundation Leadership Council was established to provide a platform to engage the institution’s most passionate, influential, and accomplished alumni and friends, chosen by virtue of philanthropic support and volunteer involvement and interest in advancing the university. Service on the Leadership Council is a prerequisite to being considered for election to the Foundation Board of Directors.

Daniel Lehan IIIDaniel Lehan III (Boston, Mass.) graduated from UVM’s Grossman School of Business in 1988 and received his M.B.A. from the Johnson School at Cornell University in 1992. Dan and his wife, Lisa, also a 1988 graduate of the Grossman School, have three children. They have been engaged with alumni activities in the greater Boston area as well as class reunions. Dan is partner and COO at Adage Capital Management in Boston. He is an active member of the Grossman School of Business Board of Advisors. Dan and Lisa are also deeply involved with the Business School’s Family Enterprise Case Competition held on campus every January.

Steve MalshukStephen Malshuk (Seattle, Wash.) was raised in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom in the village of Orleans before coming to study at UVM. He earned a degree in secondary education from the College of Education and Social Services in 1974. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1975 and six years later attended the University of Puget Sound and earned his J.D. degree. Steve and his wife, Catherine, have two sons and two grandsons. Steve serves as in-house counsel for two family businesses, and he is an avid photographer.

Inaugural Class of the University of Vermont Foundation Fellows Program

The Foundation Fellows Program is a new initiative intended to provide emerging leaders with experience and insight into how a board of directors operates. The Fellows also ensure that the perspectives and opinions of UVM young alumni are considered by Foundation committees as they do their work.

Scott BaileyScott Bailey (Boston, Mass.) is a 2009 graduate of the Grossman School of Business and is the managing director of MassChallenge Inc, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and strengthening entrepreneurs. Scott received the Alumni Association’s Outstanding Young Alumni award in 2014 and has played a leadership role in establishing the UVM alumni affinity group UVME. This Boston-area recognized affinity group’s goal is to create fun and engaging events that connect entrepreneurial-minded individuals from varying backgrounds and careers. Scott is a member of the alumni association regional board in Boston and assists with admissions and career networking activities.

Dana GulleyDana Gulley (Garrison, N.Y.) is a 2010 graduate of UVM's Rubenstein School. She was among the early graduates of the Honors College and was a very active student leader, receiving the Mary Jean Simpson award at commencement. Dana is currently the director of community engagement at Riverkeeper, a non-profit organization that advocates for New York’s clean water. After 5 years at Riverkeeper, she will be pursuing an M.B.A. in the fall at UVM.  Dana is a sustaining member of the UVM Alumni Association and has been an active volunteer with the alumni career network.

Molly Kelly-YahnerMolly Kelly-Yahner (Washington, D.C.) graduated from UVM in 2011 and majored in Latin American studies, political science and Spanish. She became engaged as an alumni volunteer in Washington, D.C., where she is currently serving on the alumni regional board and as a career network and admissions volunteer. She is a senior government affairs analyst at a nutrition company in D.C. and is in the process of becoming a fitness instructor. Molly is a sustaining member of the Alumni Association and serves on its Affinity Committee and Diversity Committee. Molly shares UVM alumni status with her mother and brother.

Germain MopaGermain Mopa (Atlanta, Ga.) is a native of Cameroon and attended high school in the U.S. before coming to UVM. He earned a degree in computer science and information systems in UVM's College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences in 2005. A software engineer, Germain was a member of the Catamount men’s basketball team that went to the NCAA tournament three consecutive years and beat Syracuse University in a famous first-round upset in 2005. Germain is a member of the Vermont Regional Board and served on the Athletic Director Search Advisory Committee. He and his wife, Jamie Walker, and their two young children live in Atlanta, Ga.

Brian SozanskyBrian Sozansky (Medford, Mass.), an emeritus member of the University’s Board of Trustees, has two degrees from the Grossman School of Business – a bachelor’s degree in 2011 and a master’s of accounting in 2012. He grew up in New Jersey and now lives and works in the Boston area. Brian is a senior associate at PwC and a licensed certified public accountant. He has assisted with recruiting new students to UVM and has attended several young alumni events in Boston.

Christopher VealChristopher Veal (Burlington, Vt.) is a member of the UVM Class of 2014. Combining interests in science and art, he graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences with majors in biochemistry and studio art. As an undergraduate, Christopher traveled to Italy and to Harvard University to present research he did under the leadership of a faculty member in the College of Medicine and was featured in Vermont Quarterly magazine. Christopher is currently doing research in the Office of Health Promotion Research and will be a student in the UVM College of Medicine beginning this summer.
