A bold policy proposal in Science Magazine by Joe Roman, a conservation biologist in UVM’s Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, and his colleague James Kraska, at the US Naval War College received high-level international media attention. Following President Obama's announced plans to close the notorious military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, Roman and Kraska proposed that the US should transform the naval base into a marine research center and international peace park. Strong stories appeared in The New Yorker, The Guardian newspaper, Popular Science, Vox, Discovery, the Christian Science Monitor, VICE, Climate Wire, Grist and many other outlets.
