Master class, rehearsals open to public during Nov. 17-19 residency

John Fedchock, a world-renowned trombonist, composer, arranger and big band leader based in New York City, will perform with the UVM Jazz Ensemble Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

The concert, free and open to the public, will feature Fedchok's original music written for his widely praised New York Big Band.

Fedchock will be in residence at UVM November 17-19, working with students in a variety of settings.

“John Fedchock has a unique sound on trombone -- one of the most lush and recognizable in jazz," said Alex Stewart, director of UVM's Jazz Studies program. "His playing combines beautifully with his often intricate original compositions in a wide range of styles from straight-ahead swing to Latin and Brazilian jazz. The ensemble has been really challenged this semester by the demands of this music to sound precise yet effortless.”

JazzReview.com praised Fedchock’s “incomparable trombone playing, which seems to have no limit, technically or musically.” The New York Times applauded his “dazzling trombone virtuosity.”

A recent review in All About Jazz praised Like It Is, the latest CD from the New York City Big Band, as finding “just the right balance of impeccable swing, rollicking solos and very tight arrangements. Great music, and quite a band!”

That album garnered a large number of this year’s Grammy award nominations, including for “Best Large Jazz Ensemble,” “Best Arrangement,” “Best Composing,” and two “Best Improvised Jazz Solo” nominations, including one for Fedchock.

Master class and open rehearsals

During his residency, Fedchok will teach a trombone master class for UVM trombone students at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the Recital Hall. The master is free and open to the public.

He will also rehearse with the UVM Jazz Ensemble on Tuesday at 4:25 in the Southwick Ballroom and on Wednesday at 4:30 in the Recital Hall. The rehearsals are also free and open to the public.
