Inaugural Teaching Academy members and other University of Vermont College of Medicine faculty celebrated scholarship, medical education curricular innovations, professional development and advancement at the 2015 Mud Season Symposium. The event kicked off March 26 with a dinner and Teaching Academy member induction ceremony, followed by a full-day symposium on Friday, March 27, at the Sheraton Burlington Conference Center.

Helen Loeser, M.D., professor of pediatrics at University of California, San Francisco, opened the symposium with a keynote lecture on “Mentoring of Value: An Academic Necessity.” Then Sunshine Nakae, Ph.D., M.S.W., ‎assistant dean for admissions, recruitment and student life at Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University, presented on “Exploring Stereotype Threat in the Medical Education Continuum.”

The event featured a Teaching Academy update from Interim Director Ann Guillot, M.D., and Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education William Jeffries, Ph.D., following which attendees participated in a variety of small-group sessions led by College of Medicine faculty on such topics as “Writing Good Multiple Choice Test Questions,” “Dos and Don’ts of Lecturing,” “How to Help the Struggling Resident,” and “How to Flip the Classroom.” Small-group presenters included William Raszka, M.D., professor of pediatrics and course director, Attacks and Defenses; Molly Rideout, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics and associate director, Pediatric Medical Student Education; Robert Low, Ph.D., professor emeritus of molecular physiology and biophysics and Foundations course faculty member; Class of 2015 medical student Benjamin Clements; Class of 2017 medical student Brian Till; Class of 2018 medical student Elizabeth Carson; Melissa Davidson, M.D., associate professor of anesthesiology; Rebecca Wilcox, M.D., assistant professor of pathology and faculty member, Nutrition, Metabolism, and Gastrointestinal System; and Jeffries.
