The Cardiovascular Research Institute of Vermont welcomed Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., to the University of Vermont on March 26 & 27, 2015 as the inaugural Sobel Visiting Professor.

The chair and physician-in-chief of the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and the Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Loscalzo lead two programs while at UVM. On Thursday, March 26, he held a seminar on “How to Write and Publish a Paper: Lessons Learned as an Author, Mentor and Editor,” which attracted a standing-room-only crowd of clinical and basic scientists. On Friday, March 27, he presented on “Systems Pathobiology and Personalized Cardiovascular Medicine,” at Medicine Grand Rounds. Both programs were open to the public.

Founded in 2002, the Cardiovascular Research Institute of Vermont’s mission is to reduce the incidence, morbidity and mortality of heart and vascular diseases by improving prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The institute encourages collaboration across UVM departments and with the UVM Medical Center.

The Sobel Visiting Professorship honors CVRI’s late founding director, Burton E. Sobel, M.D., former chair of medicine, and provides leaders in cardiovascular medicine with an opportunity to interact with, inspire and guide junior researchers.

Loscalzo graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also received his doctorate in biochemistry and his medical degree. He completed his clinical training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. In 1984, he joined the Harvard faculty and Brigham and Women’s staff. He also held positions as chief of cardiology and in other leadership positions at West Roxbury Veterans Administration Medical Center and Boston University in the 1990s before returning to Harvard and Brigham and Women’s in 2005. The recipient of numerous awards, Loscalzo has chaired several boards, committees and conferences in cardiovascular medicine and research. He currently serves as editor-in-chief of Circulation; as senior editor of Harrison’s Principals of Internal Medicine; on the Advisory Council of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; and on the Council of Councils of the National Institutes of Health.
