On Jan. 21, the Custodial Services Department recognized the achievements of its staff in improving their English language skills. The “Achievement of Success” celebration recognized 38 custodians who have participated in more than 70 hours of classroom instruction and advanced in the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) curriculum.

Through an ongoing partnership with Vermont Adult Learning, Custodial Services provides on-site ESOL classes to custodians from immigrant and refugee backgrounds. Since 2011, the partnership has offered custodial staff not only the opportunity to improve their English speaking, reading and writing skills, but the chance for professional advancement in the department’s career track progression. On-site classes range from "Low Beginners" to "Supervisor Writing" and have served scores of staff.

The “Achievement of Success” celebration was a formal opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of staff who have diligently worked to improve their English language skills. In her opening remarks to celebrants, Leslye Kornegay, director of Custodial Services, said, “A commitment to education and professional development is at the heart of Custodial Services’ mission, and I am so proud of all that you have achieved and all that you will continue to pursue.” Kornegay also noted the important connection between developing English language skills and professional advancement by recognizing individuals who have advanced to higher level positions within the department.

Instructors from Vermont Adult Learning addressed the staff and commended the students on their commitment and hard work, noting that their classrooms reflect a joviality and engagement to learn and practice their English language skills.

In the audience that day, were staff from Vietnam, the Sudan, Russia, China, Bosnia, Burkina Fasso, Poland and Butan. The Custodial Services department has employees from 22 different countries who speak a wide variety of languages.

Each staff person recognized at the event received a certificate of participation or a certificate of advancement that marked his or her individual accomplishment.
