Professor Art Woolf discusses Vermont’s fertility rate in the context of both national and global rates in his latest Burlington Free Press column. Vermont has the third lowest rate in the nation, with the average Vermont woman giving birth 1.6 times. Noting that lower birth rates are becoming a global trend as well, Woolf attributes some of the cause to factors that Vermont has in spades -- an educated population, for instance.
