Awards and Honors

Kenneth Gross, professor of mathematics and statistics, has been recognized by the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England with the organization's highest award, The Rev. Stanley J. Bezuska Lifetime Service Award for Teaching and Learning. The award highlighted Gross' numerous contributions to mathematics education, including having founded the Vermont Mathematics, Science, and Technology High School Summer Enrichment Institute which is now the Governor's Institute in the Mathematical Sciences; the Vermont Mathematics Initiative; and the impact of his work on teaching and learning of mathematics in Vermont and nationally.

The University of Vermont's Proctor Maple Research Center in Underhill, Vt., received the Richard G. Haas Distinguished Service Award from the North American Maple Syrup Council at its 54th Annual Meeting in Moncton, New Brunswick, on Oct. 25. UVM's Proctor Center was honored for their "outstanding contributions to the advancement of the maple industry" and the award recognized a team of UVM researchers and staff: Tim Perkins, research professor and director; Abby van den Berg, assistant professor; Tim Wilmot, UVM Extension maple specialist; Brian Stowe, sugaring operations and land manager; and Mark Isselhardt, research technician/analyst.
