Awards and Honors

Betsy Greene, professor and extension equine specialist, is winner of a Equine Science Award from the American Society of Animal Science. The ASAS-ESS Equine Science Award is given to recognize outstanding achievement in the areas of extension, research, teaching or agribusiness in the equine industry.

An alumnus and a professor emeritus have been accepted into the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences: Lauren Howard lives in Northfield, Vt. and has been a professor of biology at Norwich University since 1993. He received his doctorate degree from UVM as a student of VAAS Fellow Hubert Vogelmann. Howard is a plant taxonomist and a woodland ecologist who has regional and national expertise in trees shrubs and woody vines, and he established an important herbarium for plant study at Norwich. Paul Krapcho is an emeritus professor of chemistry at UVM who lives in Shelburne, Vt. He joined the faculty in 1960 and was elected University Scholar in Physical Sciences for 1990-91. His work has been in developing safer chemicals used in cancer chemotherapy, particularly the drug Pixanthrone which disrupts tumor formation, but unlike similar drugs there is no cardiotoxicity. He has received many awards for teaching and he has published widely in such major scientific journals as the Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal of Medical Chemistry and the journal Molecular Pharmacology. Other 2013 fellows include writers Julia Alvarez and Chris Bohjalian and artist Sabra Field.
