Karen Lounsbury, professor of pharmacology, Christopher Francklyn, professor of biochemistry and their team discovered that an enzyme called threonyl tRNA synthetase is being used by cancer cells to signal the human body to create additional blood vessels to feed the tumor. These findings, published in Scientific Reports, a primary research publication from the publishers of Nature -- and being presented at conferences around the country -- could be used “as part of a personalized cancer medicine approach to treat patients with greater success,” according to the study’s first author, postdoctoral pharmacology fellow Tamara Williams.
