Auditions: Euripides' "Helen"

Jan 17, 2018
6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Mann Hall 105 (Mann Auditorium)

The University of Vermont Department of Classics presents the inaugural Ambrose Classical Play, "Helen," by Euripides. Translated directly from the Greek by UVM Classics faculty and UVM Greek alumni, the play also features original music by Associate Professor John Franklin and Professor Emeritus Z. Philip Ambrose set to Euripides' original rhythms. Directed by UVM Theatre alum and Classics administrator Aaron Robinson. The play will be produced at the Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center in Burlington from March 22-25.

Auditions will happen in the Mann Hall auditorium on UVM's Trinity Campus on Wednesday, January 17 and Thursday, January 18 from 6:00-9:00pm in 15-minute 2-person time slots. Actors will be asked to read a monologue and a short dialogue scene (posted online). If interested in a musical role, actors should prepare to sing one of the pieces from the show (posted online) or 16-32 bars of their choice of a rhythmically challenging number. An accompanist will be available for music from the show only. Actors who do not have a scene partner for auditions will be provided with one. Please contact the director at Aaron.Robinson@uvm.edu to schedule an audition or simply show up (slots are first come, first served). If you can't make the audition times, please contact Aaron.

The specific rehearsal schedule will be determined upon casting, but actors should expect around four rehearsals a week (including weekend days), with five or six as we near opening, and every night the week of performance. All rehearsals will happen in Burlington at either UVM or Main Street Landing.

Soloists: Helen (woman, mezzo) and Menelaus (man, baritone), both ranges within a ninth.

Non-singing: Teucer, Theoclymenus, Messenger, Castor (men); Old Woman, Theonoe (women); Servant, Second Servant (either). Doubling possible.

Chorus: 6-12 women, all singing (Chorus Leader also has speaking lines).

Non-speaking: Polydeuces (man), and servants (either).
