Developed by Univ. of Washington
Bad things: no Mac acquisition station client
Only 50 acquisition station licenses
Priced by number of objects; Up to 8000 objects. $7K
8-32000-$12K
+ 17% annual maintenance
Import digital objects
Create, store, query
Own server or OCLC hosted
Very customizable user interface (customization)web-based
Works with MrSid image plugin
Metadata based on Dublin Core but can use modified DC or other metadata
Each collection can have its own metadata
Uses LOC controlled vocabulary or your own
Works with OAI and can be added to World cat database
Can create consortia of collections but can search by whole collection or by individual institution
The Pieces
Acquisition client (not web based) up to 50 can be installed
This is where you set up metadata database structure
Can import individual object or batch objects
Batch upload creates a table with thumbnail and cells for metadata input which you can work on at your own pace, then upload some to database or all
Collection Administrator
Add items, index records
Can have multiple administrators at three levels:
-do all
-do all for a collection
-only upload, no delete or change
The User Interface
Browse. Table of images, collection of thumbnails (like Google image search/find)
Search.collection admin sets the top or default collection to be searched. You can search any number of collections-just check the boxes.
When you pick subject field it lists all the subject lines to see what subjects are available
My Favorites allows users to pull together sub-set of images for specific use-this sub-set can be Saved as web page and posted! Hurrah! Or can pull into PowerPoint presentation.
Can have multiple views of object-two sides of postcard or image of page and transcription of page
Can also do a sort of page turner type thing? MIT is trying this.
Server Administration
Web-based
Lists number of objects
Add new collections and choose metadata template
Edit metadata template
Can enable controlled vocabulary for subject, can choose existing, or add your own and then derive a new list from that.
Can add a new field
Must be Dublin Core mapped if your want WorldCat to search on that field. Also must check the “register this collection with Worldcat” box
Can have collections that are marked “not publish” so you can work on it before going public.
Can have file names preserved or assign new file names
Transcriptions are stored in metadata? Yes, as a field in metadata, so if you want to store TEI docs you will see the tags. Not so good. But this is an image database program, not an electronic objects program.
Acquisition Station
Can acquire from scanner, from collection, or from web page.
Media Editor is where you add metadata. You can set controlled vocabulary and choose from a list instead of entering your own.
You must have a title but can leave the rest blank.
Can edit in table mode.
No duplicate detection so you can end up with duplicates.
Can streamline by setting default values “University of Vermont”-etc.
Can auto fill fields-fill one then fill up or down.
Can mark some to hold to work on later, then upload the rest.
Collection Administrator must ok the collection and run the build index.
Can build compound objects (postcards, image cubes, etc.) This is a separate process that uses a java applet. Run by collection administrator. Need to add field to search on, then build index, then run editor, find them, and designate them
Can integrate to voyager if crosswalk the metadata to MARC and add to Voyager.
