More Information

Section Description

This class is part of the Summer Enrichment Scholars Program specifically designed to give students a head start on their academic career. Secondly, this course provides an overview of the political institutions, processes, and cultures in the United States. It also includes an examination of current political, economic, policies and social issues.

Section Expectation

The Summer Enrichment Scholars Program Purpose is designed to help students of color, 1st generation students, and students of limited socio-economic background. I’m Dr. Doc Bradley, the teacher of this class. I am a 1st generation BA, let alone a PhD, and have spent much of his life dirt poor, paying for part of his education with the GI Bill. I am not a person of color, unless you consider being a rather unattractive shade of translucent pale blue a color. However, I spent 10 years teaching in Las Vegas, NV at UNLV, the 2nd most diverse school in the US, and the College of Southern Nevada, the local community college. UVM is much, much different. Stick with me. I got you. You got this. This course will provide students with an understanding of the fundamental principles upon which the U. S. government is based; knowledge of the structures, responsibilities, and contemporary issues of the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches; a clear understanding of the civil liberties and civil rights guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States; and examine the impact on the political system of American political culture and ideology, the political parties, interest groups, public opinion, and the media.

Evaluation

Textbook: Ginsberg, Lowi, Weir, Tolbert, Campbell and Spitzer "We the People" (13th Essentials Edition). Norton Grade will be accessed on 4 test and 4 homework assignments.
