More Information

Section Description

Public health law is the study of the legal powers and duties of the state, in collaboration with its partners (e.g., health care, business, the community, the media, and academe), to ensure the conditions for people to be healthy and of the limitations on the power of the state to constrain the autonomy, privacy, liberty, proprietary, or other legally protected interests of individuals. Public health ethics seek to understand and clarify principles and values that guide public health actions, offering a framework for making decisions and a means of justifying them. This is an on-line course. Strategies may include readings, videos, discussion board postings, presentations, and guest speakers. Additionally, there will be a variety of readings incorporated into the course. Required Textbook(s): Public Health Law & Ethics: A Reader (3rd edition, 2018) edited by Lawrence O. Gostin (hereinafter "Gostin"). This course is part of a pilot program that will be using Brightspace, UVM's new learning platform that's replacing Blackboard. Since only a limited number of courses will be piloting Brightspace this coming semester, you are still likely to have courses in Blackboard as well.
