More Information

Section Description

This is a 3-credit hour online course covering foundations of probability, conditioning, and independence, classical discrete and continuous models. The course will have no synchronous meeting times. Online office hours will be available using Microsoft Teams. The prerequisite for the course is MATH 020 or MATH 022 or MATH 023 (Calculus 2). Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: • Describe the definitions and properties of events, random variables. • Identify the axioms of probability. Correctly compute basic probabilistic calculations, including probability, marginal and conditional probabilities, expected values, and variances. • Compute probabilities and expected values of random variables if given their distributions. • Define and be able to identify independence of events. • Apply Bayes’ Theorem. • Identify key properties of commonly used probability distributions including normal, binomial, Poisson, and exponential. • Derive the mean and variance of commonly used probability distributions. • Identify situations where commonly used distributions are appropriate for modeling a random variable.

Section Expectation

Due to the condensed duration of the course, you should anticipate spending approximately 20 hours per week on this course.
