Section Description
The course includes descriptive and chronic disease epidemiology, health determinants, and community resources to develop strategies and interprofessional skills to improve individual and population health. Students will explore the roles of health professionals in the care of populations with an emphasis on the US health care system. Key topics of course modules include: 1. Introduction to Population Health: What determines health? 2. Fundamentals of Epidemiology 3. Health Care and Public Health Systems 4. The Epidemiology of Chronic Conditions 5. Prevention in Clinical and Community Settings 6. Improving Health in Populations.
Section Expectation
There is no required textbook. Required software includes Brightspace, Yellowdig, Microsoft Word, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Powerpoint, Screencast--o-matic free version). Other Materials: Speakers, headphones, or cell phone to hear and/or comment on audio or video recordings. There are no optional texts or materials. All materials are provided in the Course Materials. This is a 3-credit graduate course that is 100% asynchronous online. Students will complete readings, view videos, complete short readiness quizzes, and engage in weekly discussions and case studies with peers and faculty. This course is part of a pilot program that will be using Brightspace, UVM's new learning platform that's replacing Blackboard. Since only a limited number of courses will be piloting Brightspace this coming semester, you may have courses in Blackboard as well. For more information on Brightspace: go.uvm.edu/brightspace-pilot
Evaluation
In addition to discussions, online case studies, and quizzes, students will complete a final project presentation on a timely topic of interest.
