Section Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION SPAN 001 is the first course in a two-semester sequence of beginning Spanish. It is designed for the student with little or no prior knowledge of the language. The course emphasizes speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use their newly acquired skills to communicate in Spanish in a realistic and culturally appropriate manner. It will be taught remotely via Microsoft Teams. The University of Vermont respects the Department of Education’s definition of a credit hour. For every hour spent in class, students are expected to spend approximately 2 hours outside of class. Thus, in SPAN 001, a 4-credit course, students should plan to spend about 8 hours a week outside of the classroom preparing assignments and studying. COURSE OBJECTIVES • acquire vocabulary related to basic conversations, university/family life, hobbies, travel, shopping, and daily routines • develop an understanding of how to correctly pronounce words • identify question words and respond to basic questions that are foundational for conversations • speak and write about current activities using the present tense • begin to speak and write about past activities using the preterite tense • express likes and dislikes • listen to and understand basic conversations • read short, simple texts • gain broader cultural knowledge of the Spanish-speaking communities and countries REQUIRED TEXTBOOK Portales 2.0: Introductory Spanish. Students may purchase the textbook directly from the Vista Higher Learning website: https://vistahigherlearning.com/store/portales-2-0.html. There are two options: print + digital access or digital access only. Either option is fine. All students must have the textbook when the course begins.
