More Information

Section Description

This course covers the analysis of structural elements for strength, stability, and stiffness. Material covered in statics is used with the mechanical properties of materials and compatibility requirements of deflections to investigate stresses, strains, and displacements.

Section Expectation

Students will be able to: 1. Understand the basic principles of axial loading (Hookes Law, normal/axial stress, strain, shear, plastic deformation, residual stresses, permanent deformation, failure, etc.). 2. Understand the basic principles of torsion (deformation, shear stress, shear strain, plastic deformation, residual stresses, permanent deformation, gear train force transmission, failure, etc.) 3. Understand the basic principles of bending (de ection, bending stress, radius of curvature, shear ow, neutral axes, deriving elastic curve equations, failure, etc.). 4. Understand the basic principles of 3D stress transformation (Mohrs Circle, principal axes, stress states, etc.) 5. Be able to use all of the knowledge mentioned above to determine the full stress state for specimens undergoing multiple loads in multiple dimensions in order to: determine failure, design adequate cross-sections, choose desirable materials, etc.
