Section Description
¨ **STUDENTS MUST TAKE THE SPANISH PLACEMENT EXAM BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THIS COURSE. THIS IS A FULLY ON-LINE COURSE THAT DOES NOT HAVE SCHEDULED MEETING TIMES OR LOCATIONS. SPAN 001 is the first course in a two-semester sequence of beginning Spanish. It is designed for the student with little or no prior knowledge of the language. The course emphasizes all four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use their newly acquired skills in order to communicate in Spanish in a realistic and culturally appropriate manner. All classes will be taught in Spanish. The course will include at least one session per week on Teams for speaking practice. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of SPAN 001, the student: • will be able to exchange greetings, to give his/her identity, and acquire vocabulary related to basic conversations such as university/family life, hobbies, travel, and daily routines • speak and write about current activities using the present tense • begin to speak and write about past activities using the preterite tense • express likes and dislikes • engage in the reading of short, simple texts. • gain broader cultural knowledge of the Spanish-speaking communities and countries
Section Expectation
In SPAN 001, a 4-credit course, a student should expect to work at least 15 hours per week including reading, writing, discussion forums, taking quizzes and watching and creating videos. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK Portales 2.0: Introductory Spanish. Students may purchase the textbook directly from the Vista Higher Learning website: https://vistahigherlearning.com/store/school/uvm There are two options: print + digital access or digital access only. Either option is fine. All students must have the textbook when the course begins.
Evaluation
Grades are based on participation, weekly assignments, written exams, an oral exam, and final exam.
