Section Description

This clinical experience will provide an introduction to different therapeutic techniques used to remediate speech sound disorders and/or language. A focus will be on treatment planning, record keeping and client interaction. Students will be paired with a clinical supervisor and a graduate student clinician. Students will learn to plan and hold therapy sessions for an assigned client each week. Topics will include client and family interaction, goal development, therapeutic techniques, behavior management, data collection & clinical documentation.

Section Expectation

Attendance at weekly group meeting time (class time) with clinical educator and graduate student clinician. 1 hour of scheduled therapy per week either in person at the UVM Eleanor M. Luse Center or via tele-practice; to be determined). Reading of assigned articles with accompanying exercises. Weekly journals to involve critical-thinking skills; Thought papers at the beginning and end of semester. Clinical documentation. It is estimated that the weekly time needed for successful completion of this clinical experience will be approximately 3-4 hours per week. This class is designed for a student of Junior or Senior Standing who is seeking to actively obtain clinical skills prior to acceptance in a CSD graduate program. It is mandatory to have an interest interview and send a letter of interest/resume to the clinical educator before acceptance into this clinical experience.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on attendance at weekly session, group meeting, thought papers, weekly self-assessment journal, and clinical documentation.
