ANPS 19 is the first half of an interdisciplinary course sequence covering human anatomy and physiology. ANPS 20 is the second half of this sequence, and these courses are comparable to those taught in the fall and spring semesters of the academic year. ANPS 19 covers basic cell structure, tissues, and the nervous and muscular systems. The summer course format involves didactic lectures presented four days per week, complemented by online laboratory exercises.

Summer Undergraduate Human Anatomy and Physiology (19-20) is an interdisciplinary, eight week sequence of two courses offered by the faculty of the Department of Neurological Sciences. ANPS 19 is the first half (4 weeks) of this sequence. This course is specifically designed for students majoring in the health professions who need to obtain a general understanding of human biology. The course hybrid format includes mandatory in-person exams, online recorded lectures, an online laboratory component and an optional weekly in-person review session. Course Objectives: 1. To provide a common anatomical and physiological language for communication within the health profession. 2. To provide basic information about the microscopic and submicroscopic structure of organs and tissues of the human body. 3. To develop knowledge of the topographic anatomy of the human body by study of the relationships of the organ systems and their surface projections 4. To understand key physiologic principles which pertain to specific organ function.
For the summer of 2023, ANPS will be presented in a flexible hybrid model. This includes the following: *Weekly mandatory in-person exams (Friday 9-10:30am) *Optional in-person review sessions (Thursday 9am) with faculty; these give students an opportunity to meet other students, review content from the week and ask questions directly with faculty *Recorded screencast lectures with notes available on the class Blackboard website; students may work on the material at their own pace during the week. The lectures provide a discussion of the essential material to be covered. Students are responsible for information presented in lecture and appearing in the lecture notes. *Online laboratory assignments are integrated with the lecture material and are a required part of the course: students may work on the lab assignment at their own pace during the week. *Online weekly quizzes on lecture material are completed by students at their own pace during the week. *Exams will be held Friday mornings at 9am, in person. This is the only REQUIRED attendance in the course. Exams are non-cumulative and cover only the material from the current week. The exams are multiple-choice format, and will include questions from both the lecture material and lab material (see evaluation section for breakdown). Office hours will be held online.
Course grades are determined by in-person exams, online lab assignments, and online quizzes. Online labs and quizzes are done at the student's pace during the week, but must be completed before the exam for each section in order to receive credit. There are four equally-weighted exams given during the semester, one exam per week. Each exam has a portion covering the lecture material plus a section covering the laboratory material. Exams total 70% of the course grade, lab assignments 20%, and online quiz assignments 10%.
