This D1 course examines the complex interaction of religion and race in the United States. Beginning with the earliest arrival of white Europeans to the Americas, it considers how racial and religious ideas have been entangled and ever-evolving. Through studying key historical moments and contemporary movements, including Black Lives Matter and the Dakota Access Pipeline protests, it introduces race and religion as social categories that are used to define, contest, and expand the boundaries of national identity, citizenship, community, and belonging.

Course will meet asynchronously. Students will actively engage course themes through discussion boards, written exercises, reading journals, and take-home exams.

Students will be evaluated on regular reading journals, discussion boards, a personal inventory essay, a take-home midterm, and a take-home final exam.
