This one credit course will provide students with an overview of racial trauma, and explore the clinical applications and techniques necessary to help clients navigate this complex presentation. Racial trauma occurs when a person is emotionally overwhelmed through acute or continuously occurring acts of discrimination, racial bias, prejudice, violence, and/or hate crimes. As a result of this overwhelm, clients may experience shifts in cognitions, mood, energy, hypervigilance, and self-conceptualization. Racial trauma can also occur from internal narratives based on overt and covert messaging from a socially constructed caste system based on dominance and sublimation. Understanding our individual racial traumas, as well as gaining a better understanding of the racial trauma that others have endured is essential. In doing so, clinicians are better able to conceptualize treatment strategies, create stronger therapeutic alliances, and avoid fractures within the therapeutic relationship. This course will ask students to first investigate their own racial trauma, de-centralized dominant socially constructed hierarchies, and gain a better understanding of the causes, impacts, and perpetuators of racial trauma. From there, students will learn clinical techniques to identify, broach, explore, and process racial trauma with clients. The course will be presented through a mixture of lecture and discussion, reading and response, group work, and clinical practice. At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Define racial trauma and identify it within client presentations. 2. Identify the drivers and current systems that perpetuate racial trauma within the US caste system. 3. Name and begin to investigate their own racial trauma. 4. Broach, explore, and process racial trauma with clients using a PTG (Post Traumatic Growth) perspective.
Students of this course will need to attend virtual classes, participate in discussion and course activities including practice groups, review course materials outside of class time, and complete written reflections and course assignments. Students will be required to read several chapters of "Caste The Origins of Our Discontents” By: Isabel Wilkerson – (ISBN : 9780593230268) and “Transformed by Trauma: Stories of Posttraumatic Growth” By: Richard G. Tedeschi PhD and Bret A. Moore PsyD (provided) and/or review videos and podcasts outside of class - approximately 1-2hrs/week. Students will be required to complete one written assignment at the end of the course.
Students will be graded on attendance and a written reflections, group discussion participation, clinical role play and skills practice, and a larger case study at the end of the course.
