Dates: July 19- August 13, 2021 online asynchronous Full course title: Supporting Students with Emotional & Behavioral Needs in the General Education Classroom.
This course is designed for general educators, special educators, social workers, counselors, service providers and other adults who work in educational settings and support students. Throughout the course we will explore evidence based practices and behavior based interventions to support behaviorally struggling students to remain in the general education classroom environment. You will learn to understand the underlying function of students’ behavior and ways to engage students in their classroom based instruction. The course is rooted within a multi-tiered system of support framework, exploring personal, classroom, and larger systematic implications. You will learn practical strategies and skills to add to your toolbox through this online course. Together we will explore the best approaches to meet the unique of students who have a variety of needs, including students who may be labeled as ADHD, ASD, emotional disturbed, as well as those who display oppositional behaviors, and students who have experienced trauma and adverse childhood events.
The course is delivered in 5 modules over 4 weeks. Each module has a number of daily work to be completed which accounts for course participation. There are 2 additional papers, 1 at the mid-term and 1 due at the conclusion of the course. Both papers require that students integrate and apply concepts of the course to develop your own personal philosophy of education and then develop interventions for practical situations across an MTSS.
