Fundamentals of Spanish composition, comprehension, pronunciation, speaking, reading, and writing in a cultural context. Classes are conducted in Spanish and students engage in active use of the language. No prior knowledge expected. Cannot be taken for credit after SPAN 002.

Section Description

¨ **Students must take the Spanish placement exam before registering for this course.¨ This is a fully on-line course that does not have scheduled meeting times or locations. SPAN 001 is the first course in a two-semester sequence of beginning Spanish. It is designed for the student with little or no prior knowledge of the language. The course emphasizes all four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to use their newly acquired skills in order to communicate in Spanish in a realistic and culturally appropriate manner. All classes will be taught in Spanish. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of SPAN 001, the student: • will be able to exchange greetings, to give his/her identity, and name a number of familiar objects from the immediate environment. • will be able to supply limited information on familiar topics, fill out simple forms and documents, and provide basic biographical information. • will be able to engage in the reading of short, simple texts. • will judge intelligently the quality of the available resources for learning Spanish. • will be sensitive to and respectful of cultural differences. •will have broadened his/her general cultural knowledge of the Spanish-speaking communities and countries of the world today.

Section Expectation

In SPAN 001, a 4-credit course, a student should expect to work at least 20 hours per week including reading, writing, discussion forums, taking quizzes and watching and creating videos. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND ON-LINE ACCESS CODE: Portales, Introductory Spanish I, José A. Blanco + 12- month on-line access code. ISBN 978-1-68004-747-9 The book can be purchased through the publisher on the on-line store: https://vistahigherlearning.com/school/uvm You must have both the text AND on-line access code to complete the work in this course. Most assignments and quizzes will be done on line on VHL Central, the online component of the text.

Evaluation

Grades are based on participation, weekly assignments, written exams, an oral exam, and final exam.
