“Police/Power/Prison” is a course that looks at dynamics of surveillance, social control, and—as the title suggests—police power cross-culturally and in the United States. The course takes in technologies of regulation and resistance, bridges scales microcosmic to global, and considers carcerality as control both past and present. It scrutinizes media representation and countermedias (like the filming of police racisms and critical moments of violence). It looks at the roles of states; of global markets; and of formations of race, gender and class in structures of coercion and imprisonment.
Students will look at formal and informal modes of the exertion of social force, such as “citizen policing” and social media flashpoints. The class furthermore interrogates overlaps between “non-carceral” institutions like schools, hospitals, psychiatric spaces, and commercial institutions, on the one hand, and official law enforcement spaces, on the other. Students will have the chance to look at structures of policing in their own lives and the lives of other lives radically different from theirs.
Original writing on and observation of processes both at home and abroad will be incorporated into the course.
