Writers and naturalists have long used writing and sketching to deepen their own and others' understanding of the natural world and create connection to place. And it all starts with the not-so-simple act of observation. Join us as we explore the journals and essays of historical and contemporary naturalists and writers and apply what we learn to our own reading, writing, and sketching in the field. Practice seeing like a writer, artist, scientist, and naturalist and learn tools for unlocking the mysteries that surround us both in the forests and in our own backyards.
This course will only last 2 weeks, so students are expected to complete a brief activity and spend some time with our course texts before our first meeting. You'll also have a week to finish assignments after our last day. During our two weeks, you'll be in class M-F 9-1:30 (NOT until 5--that is an error in the SOC) and will have some activities to do between meetings. Barring thunderstorms, most of our class time will be spent outside. Although this course is listed as a hybrid, there is NOT an online component.
You'll complete various assignments and keep a journal. (We'll guide you on what to put in it.)
