Section Description

Course Description: Discusses concepts and principles: advanced vocabulary, grammar patterns, use of space/modulation of signs for time/location. Further explores Deaf Culture. Pre-requisites: ASL 001 or successful completion of placement interview Student Learning Outcome (SLO): At the conclusion of this course, successful students will be able to: 1. Apply accurate production, grammar, and structural rules in sentences. 2. Demonstrate comprehension and production skills in order to participate in intermediate conversations and produce short narratives. 3. Perform language and social behaviors that are acceptable within United States deaf communities. 4. Examine, compare, and contrast diverse Deaf culture with their own cultures. 5. Produce and document emerging language skills using digital media and tools.

Section Expectation

This course consists of engaging in video assignments, and viewing videos in ASL. Students are expected to actively participate by completing assigned activities, participate in video discussions, complete assignments online, respect diverse perspectives and opinions, and support your opinions and answers with reasons, explanations and documentation from a variety of sources. Learning ASL is similar to other languages. Since ASL is a visual language, use of spoken English or of speaking and signing simultaneously will disrupt this process and delay your language development. For optimal learning and experience, Students will use ASL to do video assignments (e.g., GoReact, Interactive Dialogue Chain, etc.)

Evaluation

Grades are based on participation, e-workbooks, comprehension check, video assignments, quizzes, and a final exam.
