The basis of inheritance, covering topics from classical genetics to modern molecular studies. Analysis of genetic data emphasized, from prokaryotic, animal, and plant systems. Prerequisites: [(BCOR 011 or BIOL 001) and (BCOR 012 or BIOL 002)], or BCOR 021; and also CHEM 031, or CHEM 035, or CHEM 051.
Dates: May 18 - June 12, 2020. Prereqs: BCOR 11/12 or BCOR 21 or BIOL 01/02; CHEM 31 or 35 or 51. This will be a combined lecture/discussion course.
The goals of this course are to develop a deep understanding of the major concepts in genetics, learn how to apply these concepts to solve problems, and to develop a capacity to think critically about real-world issues related to genetics.
This course is a combined lecture/discussion in a small classroom. Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to… 1. Explain foundational concepts in transmission and molecular genetics using correct terminology (knowledge). 2. Draw inferences from biological datasets to develop conclusions (skill). 3. Evaluate case studies and problem sets using a genetic and quantitative approach (skill). 4. Make connections between the molecular level of biological organization and the whole organism (skill). 5. Evaluate and articulate the contribution of genetics to society (value).
Concept tests and problem sets are graded in-class activities. Mastering Genetics homework will be due daily (MTW) by midnight. Weekly exams will be given during lecture. Final exam (cumulative) on the final day of classes.
