Section Description

This online survey course is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of the major research and theoretical foundations of social psychology and the application of social psychological concepts to everyday life. The course will cover major theories, research, and themes within the field of social psychology, illustrating the powerful influence of situational factors on human behavior and interpersonal relations.

Section Expectation

Course expectations: This online, summer session course condenses a full semester’s worth of Social Psychology into 6 weeks. This equates to approximately 2.5 weeks’ worth of material per week of the summer session, resulting in a rigorous, fast-paced, reading- and writing-intensive course. Each of the six Course Modules includes readings, quizzes, class activities, writing assignments, and an end-of-module test, with staggered due dates throughout the week (see syllabus schedule on pages 5-6 for details). Some of these assignments will ask you to share contributions with your classmates, and to provide timely responses and feedback on their contributions by a specific deadline. Others will provide you with a choice of deadlines, so it is up to you to be sure to complete and submit your work within the appropriate time frame. You should thus be prepared to devote ample time each day to completing readings and assignments, set aside protected time each week to prepare for and complete the online tests, and familiarize yourself with the course schedule to help keep track of important dates. Course Materials: 1. REVEL PLATFORM (Required course "text"): PSYS 130 OL will utilize an online learning platform called "Revel for Social Psychology" in place of a traditional textbook. This is where you will find the assigned chapter readings and associated chapter quizzes for the course. An access card for the Revel platform can be purchased through most online textbook retailers as well as directly through Pearson’s web site. Here is the information you will need to purchase an access card: Aronson, A., Wilson, T.D., Akert, R.M., & Sommers, S.R. (2019). Revel for Social Psychology (10th ed.). Pearson. ISBN-13: 978-0134700649 Once you’ve purchased access to the Revel platform, you will need to navigate to our course space. I will sound out a link to this space as the course start date approaches. 2. JOURNAL ARTICLES (Available via Blackboard): In addition to the chapters in the Revel platform, weekly assignments will include primary source (journal article) readings that can be found on Blackboard. 3. COURSE MODULES (Available via Blackboard): Readings, videos, lecture material, and assignment instructions can be found in the Weekly Course Modules on Blackboard. Course Modules are released on Friday afternoons, and assignment due dates are scattered throughout the following week.


SURVEYS (5%) (complete by the Monday night deadline to receive full credit): Each week, I will ask you to complete a brief survey in Blackboard that we can use to facilitate class discussion or to illustrate a concept. These surveys are time-sensitive as responses will be used to illustrate concepts and/or facilitate class discussions for that week’s module, so no credit will be given for late submissions. With the exception of Survey 1, your responses on these surveys are anonymous (your name will not be associated with your responses); I will only be able to see that you have completed the survey. In all cases, only aggregated group information from these survey responses (e.g., ‘this percentage of the class said _______’) will be shared with the class. CLASS ACTIVITIES (15%): Each module will contain several “Class Activities” to be completed during that week. These interactive assignments are submitted via Blackboard’s Discussion Board and Blog spaces, and may include participating in collaborative activities and class discussions, submitting or creating material to illustrate a social psychological concept, and responding to your classmates’ posts. Class activities are meant to provide an opportunity to interact with your classmates and actively engage with the course material, so your participation in these activities is time-sensitive. Class activities are due Tuesday-Thursday most weeks (see syllabus schedule). Your contributions will be evaluated based on depth of response, originality, adherence to assignment instructions, relevance to course material, punctuality, and clarity. READING ASSIGNMENTS (20%): • Revel quizzes: 60 points (10%) In each chapter of the Revel platform, you will encounter several “module quizzes” (quizzes interspersed throughout the chapter) and a “chapter quiz” at the end of each chapter. You should plan to complete all of these quizzes as you proceed through the chapter readings. You will have up to two attempts for each Revel quiz, and only your better of the two scores will count. Note that the number of quizzes per chapter and the number of questions per quiz varies; therefore, to arrive at each week’s points, I will take the PERCENTAGE correct for each week’s assigned Revel quizzes, and multiply that by 10. For example, the total points available in Revel for week 1 (quizzes for Revel Chapters 1, 2, and 3) is 398 points. If your scores for that week total 378/398 points, then you would receive 9.5/10 points credit for that week (378/398 = .95 x 10 = 9.5). If your scores for that week total 299/398 points, then you would receive 7.5/10 points (299/398 = .75 x 10 = 7.5), and so on. • Journal Article “Reading Reflection” Assignments: 60 points (10%) Each week, I will provide a selection of journal article readings to accompany that Module’s topic area. Each Reading Reflection assignment asks that you select ONE of these readings and complete the accompanying Blackboard assignment, which asks you to (1) briefly summarize the article’s methods and main findings, (2) provide a thoughtful critique and reflection on the research, and (3) connect the research to the material from that week’s module, incorporating relevant terminology where possible. Further details on these assignments can be found on Blackboard under “Assignment Instructions and Rubrics”. You are responsible for turning in a Reading Reflection for at least TWO of the six weekly Modules. Each assignment is worth 30 points, and only one assignment per module will be accepted for credit. The assignments are due at the end of the week in which they are assigned; assignments turned in past the due date will be scored for half credit, and assignments more than one week late will not be scored. Note that the last date to submit a Reading Reflection assignment for Summer 2019 is Thursday, August 8. WRITING ASSIGNMENT (Experience Analysis paper) (15%): Modules for weeks 2, 3, 4, and 5 will each include one or more Experience Analysis Paper topic option(s). You are only required to complete an Experience Analysis paper for ONE of these four modules, and due dates for these assignments are staggered throughout the term (see syllabus schedule). The Experience Analysis assignment asks that you describe a single specific event that you feel illustrates one of the broad topics from the course, and then carefully analyze the event by applying social psychology concepts and explaining how they connect with your example. Topics include Attitude Change (Modules 2 & 3), Conformity and Obedience (Module 3), Prejudice and Group Dynamics (Module 4), Aggression (Module 5), and Prosocial Behavior (Module 5). Specifics on how to complete the Experience Analysis writing assignment, including detailed prompts, a Word document template, and a scoring rubric, will be provided in Blackboard under “Assignment Instructions and Rubrics”. I will make these materials available during the first week of the course in order to give you a head start on a plan for completing these assignments. Experience Analysis Papers should be submitted as a Word document attachment via your private Blackboard Journal (you will find a link to the Journal space in the left-hand navigation menu of our course Blackboard page). Each Experience Analysis assignment will initially be scored out of 100 possible points. Your score will then be converted to a maximum of 90 points. Students may choose to complete an Experience Analysis paper for more than one Module; If you choose to do so, your better score will be converted to a maximum of 80 points, and your lower score will be converted to a maximum of 10 points. Note that this applies to new submissions only; in other words, revised versions of previously submitted papers will not be re-scored. MODULE TESTS (45%): Every Friday at noon (except during the last week of classes – see syllabus schedule), I will make a “Module Test” available in Blackboard to assess your learning of the material from that week’s module. Module Tests are administered through Blackboard, and may contain multiple choice, short answer, fill-in, or essay items. Each test will be worth up to 45 points. The Module Tests are timed, and you will be allotted a certain number of minutes to complete each test once you have opened it. This means that you should wait until you have enough time to take the test in its entirety before beginning (I will always indicate the number of minutes allotted for the test). Please note that once you have opened the test, the timer will continue to run even if you close the page. If you run out of time, you will not be able to complete the remaining items for credit. Module tests will be available for 24 hours from the time they are released. Note that the Module 6 test will be available Thursday -Friday to allow enough time for scores to be calculated prior to the submission of final grades.
