Dates: July 15 - August 9, 2019; This section is for Summer Athlete students; Cross listed with PSYS 001 Z3
This course will provide a broad introduction to the concepts of psychology, including how it functions as a science and how it relates to all aspects of our lives. This course will familiarize you with the theories and research that constitute this field, as well as the ways in which human behavior is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. This will provide a strong background for those pursuing a psychology major, and non-majors will find the information of great value to their professional and everyday lives. Course goals and objectives include: 1. An understanding of the scientific methods and critical research/ethical issues involved in psychological research, 2. An acquaintance with a broad array of subjects within the field and an increased understanding of the multitude of factors that influence human behavior, 3. Some ideas of how to apply psychological principles in your own life, and 4. Experience thinking critically about psychological concepts and research practices.
This course combines lecture and discussion formats. Due to the compact nature of the summer course, students should expect to spend 15-20 hours a week on coursework outside of class.
Your grade will be based on your performance on 4 quizzes, in-class participation, and a short, 10-15 minute presentation. There may also be homework occasionally beyond the assigned reading and/or in-class assignments. Students are expected to attend all classes, to complete assigned readings beforehand, and to participate in discussions. These assignments are subject to change prior to the first class meeting.
