Section Description

Students will learn the fundamentals of being responsible stewards of honey bee colonies and the skills to support good decision making in today’s changing world of beekeeping. This introductory course will be held at the UVM Horticultural Farm and offers a combination of classroom lectures and hands-on field experience on topics including basic bee biology, the factors driving global pollinator decline, purchasing equipment and bees, integrated pest management, and successful strategies for overwintering. ****NOTE: THE LAST DAY OF CLASS WILL BE JULY 13th. Course Objectives: 1. Attain the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to be responsible beekeepers and support good decision making. 2. Understand basic bee biology 3. Understand the major threats to both managed and wild pollinators and the current issues faced by beekeepers.

Section Expectation

Course will be held at the UVM Horticultural Farm and consist of 50% classroom, 40% outdoor fieldwork, and 10% laboratory. Students will gain additional experience and ‘hive time’ outside of the course through 1-2 individualized field trips with local beekeeping mentors. On the last day of the course (Saturday, July 13th), students will attend the Vermont Beekeepers Association (VBA) summer meeting and have the opportunity to become VBA certified beekeepers. Attendance is mandatory for every class as each class serves as a foundation for the next. For this course, students are required to purchase a VBA membership($5 for students), a textbook (TBA), a veil/jacket, and gloves. Protective clothing and proper handling techniques greatly reduce the risk of bee stings. However, some bee stings are inevitable.

Evaluation

Grades are based on attendance and participation, quizzes, weekly assignments, and a final presentation based on an individualized field trip with a local beekeeping mentor.
