Examines literary, historical approaches to Bible and its influences. Topics include: Bible as Literature; Bible and Literary Imagination. May repeat for credit with different content. Pre/co-requisite: Three hours in English courses numbered ENGS 005 - ENGS 096; minimum Sophomore standing.

The Bible as Literature is premised on the notion that a full understanding of the Bible requires an in-depth consideration of how, why, and when it was written. To that end, the course will focus on the development of Israelite-Jewish culture in its relation both to the rise and fall of the nation-states of Israel and Judah and to the biblical notion of the covenant as this at once inflected and was inflected by cultural and political affairs. The final section of the course will examine the emergence of Christianity as one line of evolution within this predominantly Jewish culture, with particular attention to how the concept of the Messiah (the anointed one) was applied to Jesus of Nazareth.
Reading of assigned texts from the Bible along with two works of modern scholarship: Michael Walzer's "In God's Shadow: Politics in the Hebrew Bible" and John Dominic Crossan's "Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography." A series of short writing assignments based on relation of primary to secondary reading.
