Subjects vary by semester. Representative topic: Jane Austen, Page and Film. May be repeated for credit with different content.
Dates: May 20 - June 14, 2019
Did you know that debates on slavery, and the fear of riots, occur in the novels of Jane Austen? Austen's attunement to language and other mediums of human social intelligence--in matters both big and small, skeptical and hateful, as well as romantic-- provides the challenging reason to read her work right now. Too often considered fairy tales about well-to-do marriages, Austen’s novels run the gamut from fake gothic castles to modern, middle-class tourist developments by the sea. In this course you will complete the satisfying task of reading (or re-reading!) four of Austen's six completed novels during the summer semester. You will also learn more about Austen's life, contemporary world, and ongoing influence as a global phenomenon.
Active interpretive close reading of assigned texts, online discussion, viewing of short lecture files and clips, and multiple writing assignments.
In addition to participation and possible quizzes on the material, course evaluation will include: a daily Blackboard Reading Journal; four short (one page) Narrative assignments that combine critical and creative writing; a short film response to an Austen adaptation of your choice; a short Close Reading paper; and a longer final Research Project.
