The purpose of this course is to address head-on a crisis facing our 21st century schools: gun violence. Issues to be explored include (but are not limited to) historical perspectives on school safety, theories on the sources of violence in schools (e.g., social media, film, music, peer pressure, mental health disorders) and their merit, relationship building as an antecedent intervention, and action steps to be taken to help prevent further school tragedies. Learning resources include journal articles, documentary films, podcasts, guest speakers, and group discussion. The course will also use a text focused on building relationships with those "hard to reach" students. Relationship building is positioned as the primary intervention, the one which precedes the success of any other academic or behavioral intervention.
This course combines lecture and discussion formats. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for the semester-long project. Participation is a crucial aspect of this course and is defined as regular attendance with ongoing conversations with and between peers and the instructor.
Grades are based on attendance and participation, weekly assignments, and a final learner-centered project.
