Topics in Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature. Subjects vary by semester. Representative topics: Tolkien's Middle Earth; The Hobbit; Survey of Science Fiction and Fantasy. May be repeated for credit with different content.

Ever wonder where Tolkien came up with the word ‘hobbit’? Want to know the literary sources behind the names of the dwarves. Does Bilbo’s conversation with the dragon, Smaug, spark your imagination? Are you curious to know the degree to which The Hobbit is a literary and mythological masterpiece? Interested in plotting Bilbo Baggins’ growth as a hero? Want to know more about the Shire? Did you love Peter Jackson’s movies? This is your course. In this four-week, three-credit online course, we will focus solely on Tolkien’s achievement in transforming a story written mostly for his children into a wonderfully crafted fairy-story that left its readers of 1937/38 begging for more hobbits.
Students will be evaluated based their postings, two five-page reviews, and two eight-page papers.
