Section Description

The Educational Leadership & Policy Program is pleased to announce its summer session of the Education Policy Book Group. The Group’s purpose is to bring together CESS students, faculty, and staff in reading books on timely policy issues, and to provide a forum for discussing these books. During Summer 2019, the Group will read three books. Participants may sign up to read all three, or just one or two! Please contact Tammy Kolbe ( for more information. During this second session, students will read Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City. In his 2017 Pulitzer Prize winning book, Evicted, Matthew Desmond portrays the lives of eight low-income families who struggle with housing insecurity. In doing so, he highlights the stress inadequate and unstable housing plays places on low-income families and communities. The book provides a starting point for rich discussion about the intersection of families, communities and schools, as well as the implications of housing insecurity and mobility on school-aged children.

Section Expectation

Meeting dates: June 25 & July 11 9, 5-9 p.m. (Includes potluck dinner) (Face-to-face meetings will be supplemented with additional online/hybrid discussion sessions and some supplemental readings to expand and enhance our face-to-face discussions.)

Students will participate in online and face-to-face discussions about course material. In addition, students will maintain an online journal, and complete a final written paper (not to exceed 5 pages).
