Lectures or readings on contemporary issues in Community Development and Applied Economics at the graduate level. Prerequisite: Graduate standing.
Dates: June 17 - July 12, 2019; Cross listed with PA 395 OL1; Full Title: Nonprofit Development - Insight in to Fundraising and Grant Writing
The backbone of any successful nonprofit organization is its development operations. This includes various different forms of fundraising and business planning processes. This class will explore the fundraising cycle and the different elements of fundraising. Specifically, students will gain a strategic understanding of the overall "fundraising process" in the nonprofit world. We will understand and review the different elements of a fundraising process – starting from helping an organization map goals and activities to develop donor engagement, build lasting relationships, and gain financial support toward the cause it serves. We will do an in-depth study of two different types of fundraising activities: how to conduct annual campaigns and how to write effective grant proposals to foundations. Students will review the donor pyramid and understand the importance of donor segmentation (supporters, volunteers, prospects, small to major donors, foundations and government funders) to better approach the fundraising process.
