Application of International Classification of Functioning (ICF) concepts to translational research in human function and rehabilitation science.
Dates: May 20 - June 14, 2019; HFRS PhD students, GRAD students or permission of instructor; Course meets in person TWR from 9 am-12:45 pm. The remainder of the course is held online.
Understanding how a disease affects one’s functioning allows for more effective planning of services, treatment, and rehabilitation for persons with disabilities or chronic conditions. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) provides a useful framework for operationalizing individual participation to societal and community integration by offering a common language and classification system of functioning and disability across various healthcare settings and contexts. The ICF also is key to a heuristic process in guiding rehabilitation research. Utilization of the ICF in human functioning and rehabilitation sciences research can enhance multi-professional communication and can inform to generate innovative outcomes-based research that is interdisciplinary and inclusive of physiological functioning, physical activity and exercise behavior, movement science, and communication science. The course will provide an overview of the ICF model and will provide several applications of the ICF framework to human functioning and rehabilitation science. Most uniquely, it will further support interdisciplinary thinking, practice, and research by enhancing the opportunity to look at research questions with an innovative and biopsychosocial approach.
