More Information

Section Description

Strategic writing is goal-oriented writing, whether you are using it to help an organization achieve its goals, or writing a persuasive cover letter to convince a recruiter to hire you. This course introduces the essential skills needed to write strategically, concisely and vibrantly in any format: Identifying and targeting messages and story ideas, planning and organizing a story, interviewing, writing feature stories and press releases, newsletters and blogs—as well as business letters, emails and cover letters. We’ll also complete a core writing project for a Service Learning partner that will use these skills. Every student will be expected to turn in polished, professional work in a timely fashion.

Section Expectation

This asynchronous online course includes weekly online readings and assignments. Students can expect to spend 2-3 hours a week on coursework outside of class, which includes a core writing project for a service learning partner. NOTE: ***Please don’t take this course if you already have a full courseload or very tight sports/classes schedule.*** It is a writing-intensive, deadline-focused class that you can’t just “squeeze in” between other work, even though it is online.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on attendance and participation (accessing course regularly and responding promptly to communications), completing assignments on deadline, and the professional and timely completion of the core writing project.
