Office Location: 16 Colchester Ave. room 301 ( I will not be in my office regulary over the summer) Required Text(s) Calculus for Business, Economics, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences by Barnett, Ziegler, Byleen, and Stocker online version with the MyMathLab Supplement. You can purchase it directly through Pearson on Blackboard. Course Description and Prerequisites Fundamentals of Calculus I is the first course in a two course sequence. The underlying applications of differential calculus and beginning integral calculus will be investigated (chapters 2 – 5 of the textbook). This will include an understanding of functions, limits, continuity, rates of change, derivatives (including implicit), derivative applications, antiderivatives, integrals and The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. An emphasis will be made to understand these new concepts graphically, numerically, verbally, and algebraically. The course work will involve some fairly intense computations and mathematical modeling, and it is required that students purchase or obtain an appropriate calculator. A TI-83/84 Graphing calculator is highly recommended, but a basic scientific calculator capable of performing exponential and logarithmic operations is adequate. Course Goal Upon the successful completion of the course, a student will be able to adapt his or her knowledge of functions, limits, and rate of change in order to analyze and make conclusions about real world situations. Note: A common follow-up course would be Math 020. The exams will cover material as follows: Midterm: The Midterm will cover Chapters 2, 3. Final Exam: The final exam is cumulative and will cover Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5. Policies Students are required to abide the Code of Academic Integrity. Method of Evaluation Homework on MyMathLab - 20% Quizzes - 25% Midterm Exam - 25% Final Exam - 30% Homework (20%): Following each section covered there will be a corresponding assignment. Students must log on to the MyMathLab system through blackboard and complete the homework. There will be an approximate schedule of assignments on Blackboard. You will be given unlimited attempts on each problem for homework. Once you try 3 times you will have to choose try a similar problem to get a new problem. I will drop the lowest 4 MyMathLab assignments at the end of the course. Quizzes (25%): There will be a quiz every week unless there is an exam that week. Quizzes will be given on MyMathLab. After the last quiz has been given I will drop the lowest 2 quiz grades. I will not go in and give credit for answers that are entered in incorrectly so make sure you are careful when you enter in answers. It is expected that you are completing quizzes independently, doing otherwise will be considered a violation of the code of academic integrity. Midterm Exam (25%): The Midterm Exam will be given on MyMathLab. You will be given a specific window of time to complete it in. You will get two attempts per problem, so be sure that you enter in the answer properly. I will not go in and give credit for answers that are entered in incorrectly.
