This upper-level course for dedicated writers of fiction employs a seminar/workshop format, with most classroom time devoted to manuscript discussion. The class will be composed of writers at varying levels of formal accomplishment; all feedback and professional advice will be tailored to a given student's current level of ability. No prerequisites, standing or permission required.
Dates: July 15 - August 9, 2019
In this online workshop, writers of varied experience work together to create more readable, more intriguing, and ultimately more publishable short stories. Our reading schedule will be light, given our limited time frame: we'll read between four and five pieces from BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES, and drafts from the workshop. But the light reading list will be balanced by some serious composition -- I'll ask you to produce two short pieces, as well as several drafts of same, in four short weeks. No prerequisites are required.
The idea is to produce two short stories, highly polished and workshopped with other talented writers. Why this goal? It matches what most MFA programs require you to submit when applying for admission. And even if you're not planning on an MFA, using this summer to kickstart your composition process is the best way of ensuring that your writing continues to evolve and grow.
Writers will be graded on online response frequency, as well as two finished pieces, due at midterms and at finals.
