Faculty guide students in clinical settings to maximize exposure to all aspects of the nursing process with adults having selected psychiatric/mental health problems. Prerequisite: GRNS 305. Pre/Co-requisite: GRNS 306.

This course is the implementation of holistic nursing care for clients with mental illness based on theoretical and conceptual models and rationale. Faculty supervise students in complex practice settings using all steps of the nursing process based on psychiatric-mental health scope and standards. Collaboration is emphasized with all members of the inter-professional team.
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 1. Collect comprehensive health data that is pertinent to the client’s health, culture, and situation during implementation of the nurse/client relationship. 2. Analyze the assessment data, determine diagnoses, or problems including level of risk. 3. Identify expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the client and situation. 4. Develop and implement a plan of strategies to attain expected outcomes through the use of therapeutic interpersonal skills. 5. Collaborate and coordinate care delivery with the interprofessional team. 6. Employ teaching and learning strategies to promote clients’ mental health. 7. Provide structures and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment in collaboration with clients, families, and other healthcare members. 8. Incorporate knowledge of pharmacological, biological, and complementary interventions with applied clinical skills to restore the client’s health and prevent further disability. 9. Consider factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact of practice in the planning and delivery of care. 10. Evaluates one’s own practice in relation to counter transference, professional practice standards and ethical guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations.The clinical course objectives for the course are leveled for the pre-licensure RN student and based on the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice (ANA, APNA& ISPN, 2014). A psychiatric nurse functioning at a basic level is "characterized by the use of the nursing process to treat people with actual or potential mental health problems, psychiatric disorders, and co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders. This nursing process is meant to promote and foster health and safety; assess dysfunction and areas of individual strength; assist persons to achieve their own personal recovery goals by gaining, re-gaining, or improving coping abilities, living skills, and managing symptoms; maximize strengths; and prevent further disability.” (ANA, APNA & ISPN, 2014, p.25).
This clinical course is graded as “Satisfactory" or "Unsatisfactory". The expectations for clinical performance are outlined on the GRNS 307 Clinical Evaluation form and include clinical assignments. The written clinical assignments will be evaluated using the graduate grading scale. Achieving the minimum benchmark of 83% or greater will be appraised as Satisfactory. A score of 82.4% or lower will be appraised as Unsatisfactory. The 75 hours of clinical experience will include orientation and also involve direct client care activities and conferences with faculty and/or staff. You are expected to attend all clinical days, having reviewed pertinent research and literature in preparation of submissions of written work and for the clinical care situation(s).
