Statewide population-focused public health nursing experience involving needs assessment, program development, case management, health promotion, disease prevention, and protection strategies, with opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. Prerequisites: GRNS 311, GRNS 312. Co-requisite: GRNS 314.

Section Description

Population-focused nursing experience involving needs assessment, program development, health promotion, disease prevention, and protection strategies. Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration to meet the needs of an identified population, while providing care that is consistent with the ANA Scope and standards of practice (2010) and the Quad Council practice competencies for public health nursing (2013) are provided.

Section Expectation

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 1. Conduct a health assessment of a selected population using an appropriate framework. 2. Develop, implement, and evaluate population-level interventions that address the core functions of public health and public health nursing competencies using evidence-based practice in collaboration with community partners. 3. Explore a variety of public health activities in the community that contextualize theoretical discussions (e.g. waste disposal, water treatment, WIC clinics).

Evaluation

Students are required to earn a satisfactory grade in clinical. An unsatisfactory grade in a clinical course is grounds for dismissal. Pass / fail grading will be based on the successful completion of all community projects and required number of clinical hours.
