Fundamentals of music notation, rhythm, melody, scales, and harmony. A course for non-majors or for students preparing to enter MU 103 or MU 109. May not be counted toward the Music major except for Music majors with a concentration in Technology and Business.

Section Description

In this online course, students will develop understanding of and skill in music theory fundamentals - including music notation, rhythm, melody, scales, and harmony. A course Blackboard site, as well as an interactive companion website (CourseMate by Cengage Learning) to the textbook (Duckworth, W. A Creative Approach to Music Fundamentals, 11th Edition) will be used.

Section Expectation

Students will demonstrate understanding of musical concepts involving: • pitch • rhythm • meter • notation • major and minor scales • key signatures • intervals • triads • dominant seventh chords • music analysis • songwriting A piano or keyboard will be required in the demonstration of some of these concepts. Students are expected to keep up with the week-by-week assignment schedule. Once a new week has started (on Mondays), work from the previous week will be viewed as late and will only be eligible for half credit. Discussion Board questions and answers submitted after noon on the Friday of the week in which they are assigned will not receive credit.


Class Participation as demonstrated through answering the questions(s) posed by the instructor in the Chapter Instructor’s Video – 5% Class Participation as demonstrated through the “Engagement Tracker” in CourseMate – 20% Class Participation through Blackboard’s “Discussion Board” questions and answers – 10% Concept understanding demonstrated via piano/keyboard assignments 10% Tutorial Quizzes (one for each of the 15 chapters) - 10% Tests (2 – midterm and final) – 20% each Songwriting assignment – 5%
