Section Description

This course is a broad introduction to major topics and significant themes in East Asian history with a primary focus on places we now call China and Japan. Significantly, we will explore the history of both from a comparative perspective that stresses the impact and influence of each society on the other in an effort to transcend the intellectual limitations imposed by the political boundaries of the nation-state. In doing so, we will interrogate problems of historical knowledge and representation relevant to anyone possessing a sincere desire to develop a contemplative and compassionate understanding of our shared human past. Course Materials: All materials are available through our course Blackboard (Bb) webpage. • Profcast lecture videos from Prof. Esselstrom • Brief historical primary source documents for class discussion and/or participation quizzes • Webpage links and online videos for class discussion and/or participation quizzes

Evaluation

Course Assignments and Evaluation: • Unit Essays – 52.5% (3 @ 17.5% each): based on course materials presented in each unit, no outside sources needed; evaluation rubric is available in the content folder for each assignment. • Class Discussions – 28.5% (6 x 4.75% each): Evaluation of participation will be based upon timely submission of posts and meaningful engagement with the contributions of classmates. Students must make an initial post to class blog on the assigned day and discussion will continue until the end of the following day. • Participation Quizzes – 19% (20 X .95% each): As the primary means by which students ‘attend’ the class, quiz responses must be submitted by 11:59 PM (U.S. East Coast time) on the day they are assigned. Each submission will be recorded as either full credit, half credit (poor quality response or late submission) or zero credit (no submission)
