About ASCI 134 BU1

The summer program is based on the University of Vermont's College of Agriculture and Life Science's CREAM Program (Cooperative for Real Education in Agricultural Management), which has been helping students gain hands-on large animal experience for over 25 years. This one-of-a-kind program has helped distinguish its alumni from many other applicants seeking admission to veterinary school. The work-based learning experience gives a select group of 15 students the opportunity to manage a herd of 60 registered Holstein cattle for the duration of the summer. Through lab and farm work, students will learn about a broad range of topics related to animal well-being such as animal nutrition, parasitology, anatomy/physiology, immunology, genetics, and diagnosing and treating common illnesses.



Dates: May 20 - August 9, 2019; Will meet off campus at the Dairy Barn Mon & Wed 8:00 AM to 9:15 AM and Mon & Thursday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM throughout the entire summer. Instructor permission required

Section Description

CREAM (134) is the first semester of the Cooperative for Real Education in Animal Management. Students will be expected to perform all the management tasks associated with a farming enterprise including, milking the herd twice a day, checks on all the cows twice a day, keeping the barn in a clean order and all tasks associated with providing a clean product for processing.

Section Expectation

1. Introduce and discuss the current practices in dairy farm management and apply that knowledge to the management of the CREAM herd. 2. Familiarize students with how to manage and operate a business. 3. Provide students the opportunity to gain leadership, communication, problem solving and time management skills that will give them an advantage in their careers and make them more valuable to future employers.


You will be evaluated on your participation in running your business and in the learning that you accomplish in that role. Your grade will be based 50% on the evaluation you receive from your peers, 20% on an evaluation by the advisory group , 20% on in class assignments and 10% on an overall grade of your groups’ performance, also assigned by the advisory group.
