Subjects vary by semester. Representative topic: Reading the American Wilderness. May be repeated for credit with different content.
Dates: July 16 - August 10, 2018
This online course is an examination of the serious longform comics that have become a significant literary genre in the last thirty or so years. We will be reading both fiction and nonfiction, but you shouldn't expect any superhero comics. We will solely be reading work written originally in English, so you shouldn't expect any manga. Works will include graphic novels by Art Spiegelman, David Mazzucchelli, Alison Bechdel, Lynda Barry, Zander Cannon, Jason Shiga, and Eleanor Davis.
Because the course will meet online, a significant portion of the grade will come from "class participation" in forums and discussions. You will also be asked to write a few short papers in response to specific prompts.
