Introductory course on techniques of writing poetry, short prose fiction, and creative nonfiction. Classes organized around discussion of student work; weekly writing assignments. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing.

Good writing is not easy but the craft of writing well can be learned. In this course, works by contemporary writers will provide models and inspiration for your own poetry, creative nonfiction, and short fiction writing. Imaginative writing exercises, writing prompts and thoughtful feedback will support your efforts while preparing you for an upper-level course in creative writing.
Two poems, two essays, and two pieces of short fiction, all revised. Responses to assigned readings and active, prompt participation in online discussion and peer review
The course is divided into four weekly modules: Warming Up to Writing; Writing Poetry; Writing Creative Nonfiction; and Writing Fiction. Each module is worth 25% of the final grade.
